Summer fun at Magnolia Branch

As Alice Cooper sings, "School’s out for summer!” And so it begins when students and adults alike are looking for a place to cool off and enjoy each other’s company during the summer months.

In Southwest Alabama, there are many activities for families to enjoy, and most are within a short driving distance. At Magnolia Branch Wildlife Reserve in Atmore, Ala., the case for having fun is already won.

Making a splash

Beginning every May (the unofficial beginning of summer for most of the South) and lasting through Labor Day (the unofficial end of summer), Magnolia Branch opens all of its water activities for people to enjoy. Those include tubing, the waterblob and zip lines. Canoeing and kayaking can be done year-round, so let’s not forget those, too.

In addition to all the summer water activities to enjoy, Magnolia Branch has a few new amenities to offer Tribal members and other guests. At the end of last year, the park began renting bicycles to anyone who wanted to take a leisurely ride around the campground or on the trails. For $5 an hour, hop on a standard-size Specialized Hardrock adult mountain bike and take your own tour through our hidden piece of nature.

Not only is cycling a different way to appreciate nature, but it’s also as healthy for you as walking. According to online health research, riding a bicycle regularly is one of the best ways to reduce your risk of health problems associated with a sedentary lifestyle. It also improves your muscle strength and joint mobility.

What a catch!

Another pleasure to partake in at Magnolia Branch is fishing. The lakes are now stocked with plenty of blue gill, catfish and shell cracker. It’s free to fish for as long as you want, and you can keep what you catch. What’s better than catching and preparing your own dinner? Throw out your line and see what surprise catch you reel in.

Come on out this summer and soak up the sun having fun and enjoying all the things Magnolia Branch has to offer. For pricing details on specific activities, visit or call 251-446-3423.
